Snæfellsjökull National Park

At the foot of the glacier

Snæfellsjökull National Park is situated in the far west of Iceland and is one of the best known and most popular parks in the country. It is on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and home to the famous Strato volcano which rises to a height of 1448 metres.

The park was established in 2001 and covers 170 km². It has many unmarked paths and thirty particularly for hikers, ranging in duration from about ten minutes to five hours. Depending on the route you choose you'll pass charming fishing villages, cooled lava fields or you will come close to the volcano. The best known trail is the Arnarstapi-Hellnar that takes you along the coast. Congealed lava has been sculpted through time to form wonderful arches and caves. The Svalþúfa - Lóndrangar - Malarrif trail will take you to the famous two Basalt Lóndrangar columns. With a little luck you might spot an arctic fox and some birds. The Snæfellsjökull ascent takes a whole day and is rewarded with a stunning view of the ocean. It requires a good level of fitness, equipment and preparation.
