Photos and experiences from a Florida road-trip in February 2014

Photos and experiences from Thomas D. in Orlando, February 2014

Orlando 1

It has now been about three years since we rented a motorhome with CampingCar-Online. It was a liberating and beautiful experience!

The motorhomes are very well equipped (especially in the case of Camping-World, but not sure about others). Ours had an oven (but no baking pan), gas stove, micro-wave, fridge, freezer, shower, sink, toilet, and 2 TVs with DVD player (make sure to check the zone, American DVD players cannot play French DVDs and vice-versa). The interior was a little kitschy, but very comfortable. Our motorhome had slide-outs in the bedroom and the living area, which made for comfortable spaces, especially on rainy days. The bedding was great, especially in the rear bedroom.

There was even a barbecue, which we made use of every day. We made a trip to Florida with our two children, 3 and 5 years old. This year we rented an X31, and the two previous years we rented a K32, both of which were very clean and in fantastic condition.

It should be noted that we rented the X31 because the K32 was no longer available. In February and March these motorhomes are in very high demand, so you must reserve months in advance. Either way, the driving was easy, and no need for an over-weight vehicle permit!

There are many campgrounds in Florida ranging in price from $20/night in national parks like Fort Wilderness, to $120/night in locations like Disneyland and the Keys.

For the most part, campgrounds are equipped with electricity, fresh-water, and waste-water hook-ups. There were pic-nic tables with benches at all the campgrounds where we stayed.

We did an entire trip around Florida in one month, which left us plenty of time to enjoy. We arrived in Orlando and flew back to Paris with layovers in Cincinnati and Minneapolis for 480 €. Watch out for accidents…this year someone hit the back of our motorhome and we lost $350 or our $1000 deposit! We are still going through the steps to get reimbursed from our insurance company.

In summary, it was an amazing experience besides from that!! Next year, we are going to reserve the same trip but at another time of year (too many people, especially the “snowbirds”, retirees who come to pass the winter in the sun).
