Parc national Prespès

The land of legends

The Prespes National Park is an absolutely exceptional site. It is located in the extreme north of Greece and is shared between Greece, Albania and the Republic of Macedonia. It boasts beautiful scenery, a rich fauna and flora and ancient ruins testiment to the region's history.

The heart of the park was declared a "Protected International Wetland" in 1973 by the Ramsar Convention and is dotted with fields of roses and beautiful valleys. There are many birds species in the park, including migratory birds, pelicans, cormorants, egrets and herons. The Prespa Lakes region is also home to several endemic fish and turtle species. The remoteness and beauty of the region attracted many monks who settled there during the Ottoman period and the ruins of their monestries still stand today. Panagia Eleousa is the largest shrine in the region. Despite its wildness and isolation the Prespes National Park is a very hospitable region.
