Unspoilt Mediterranean landscapes

West of Madrid lies the biggest Mediterranean mountain region in the world. The Monfragüe National Park has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2003 and is a special area for bird ​​protection since 1994.

The park's typical landscape is Mediterranean forest and scrubland dotted with rocky elevations and cut by rivers. It is a very lonely region leading one to think that it has always been uninhabited. But there are some cave paintings, the Sierra de Corchuelas being the most important. The park is also home to the black vulture and black stork, very rare birds in Europe. There are many scenic viewpoints in the park from which you may be lucky enough to see these birds.
