From Bologna, Milan or Venice you can discover Italy's oldest and largest national parks. Mountains and glaciers sheltering an exceptional fauna and flora await you.
Gran Paradiso National Park is the oldest park in Italy. It was created in 1922 and extends over 70 000 hectares. It is characterised by forests, vast meadows and glaciers. Mount Gran Paradiso is the highest peak and is over 4000 metres. Hiking, climbing and mountain biking are possible activities.
Val Grande National Park, near Milan, is the largest in the country. it was established in 1992 and covers 14 500 hectares. Its highest peak is Mount Togano which peaks at 2300 metres. This park is home to unique historical relics such as cave paintings and military fortifications from the First World War. The hikes offer exceptional views but can be difficult.
There are numerous other parks in the north of the country that offer wonderful scenery and great activities. Some of them are: the Adamello Brenta Natural Park, Paneveggio-Pale di San Martin and the Trentino Nature Reserve. The parks are home to many animals including deer, marmots, foxes and ibex.
